Meet Mike Sizemore
Candidate for Marion County Commission District 3
I was born in Virginia and raised in Ohio. I pursued a career in the railroad industry, working
my way up from freight service, passenger conductor to Terminal Superintendent in charge of
all Conrail operations of Ford, Chrysler, GM and other major industries in Detroit. After more
than 20 years with the railroad we moved to Marion County. My late wife Linda worked 17
years for the Marion County School System at Stanton Weirsdale and Harbour View before I
lost her to cancer in 2000. I presently live in Ocklawaha with my wife Barbara whom I married
in 2004. I am a member of the Ocklawaha United Methodist Church. Together we have four
children, nine grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Most of our family still lives here in
Marion County.
Before coming to Marion County I volunteered in many different capacities in the communities in which I lived,
including service as a loaned Executive to the United Way, member of the Executive Board of The March of Dimes
and also Teen Advisor, President Parent Teacher Council, youth programs and much more.
- Honorably discharged from the United States Naval Reserves and am proud to be associated with
the local Veterans’ community.
- I served as PTO President, School Advisory Committee Chair and member Drug Abuse
Resistance Education (DARE) programs at Stanton Weirsdale and Harbour View Elementary Schools;
also served on the Senior Advisory Committee to the Superintendent Schools, from 1984 to 1999.
- Presently serving on the Public Policy Institute (PPI) Board of Directors and Executive Board (a
non-profit public think tank) this has provided me with vast information on such issues as Affordable and
Workforce Housing, Traffic/Transportation and most recently Access to Health Care. I am now serving on the
lead team working to implement the findings of the Access to Healthcare Study. See studies at the following

- Presently serving as Vice Chair of the Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC) to the Transportation
Planning Organization (TPO) for Marion County. TPO establishes transportation priorities for the
entire county working with the Florida Department of Transportation.
- Served two terms beginning in 2000 on Marion Soil and Water Conservation District (MSWCD),
serving as Chairman in 2007. Working to protect and preserve springs , lakes and rivers by promoting best
land and water use management practices (BMPs): conserving, improving, and sustaining the natural
environment.
- In 2007 I served as Vice Chair of the EMSA Task Force charged with making a recommendation to the
county commissioners regarding the future of EMSA. Our Advanced Life Support System (Ambulance
Services).
- Participant and supporter of Altrusa Reader program
- Member of Ocala Marion County Chamber of Commerce and Lake Weir Chamber of Commerce.
My involvement in Marion County has provided a clear understand our issues. I admire and treasure our wonderful
assets. I have worked hard to protect our water for future generations. Over the years I have taken a leadership roll in
issues, using my experience to guide the process toward solutions that truly reflect the will of the people. It is my goal
to prevent the people who are here from paying for those who are coming.
